If you are looking to adopt a pet in the near future, there are many places to search for your next family member. In the Rockville area, there are a variety of rescues where you can check out the pets available. Adoption is great for families and pets alike, and here are a few places where your next family member may be waiting for you.
The Montgomery County Humane Society (MCHS) helps to end animal homelessness with education, outreach, and adoption. A private organization and a no kill shelter, the society offers micro chipping and registration for pets, and an affordable spay and neuter clinic.
This Rockville based rescue is specifically tailored for Beagle lovers. They support Beagles and families in Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, and Eastern Pennsylvania. On their website you can foster, adopt, sponsor, or donate to the organization. It should be noted that there is no physical location, and all dogs are either in foster homes or private kennels. To adopt, you fill out an application on the website.
For those who know the joys a senior pet can bring, this local Rockville organization specifically caters to senior pets. Some of their pets were abandoned while other pets lost their caregivers to illness or old age. Senior dogs and senior cats deserve to spend the remainder of their days in warm and loving homes, not in shelters. Leashes end was established in 2016 to rescue senior animals and provide them with a sanctuary. Although the pets are not up for adoption, as a 501(c)(3) they do accept financial donations to cater for the pets in their care. You can also view pictures of all of the adorable pets in their sanctuary on the website.
The Capital Animal Rescue and Environmental Foundation (CARE) has a downloadable pdf application on their website for anyone interested in animal adoption. Founded in 2009, they provide services such as dog behavior training and rehabilitation to raise money to help shelters rescue pets. They provide support and guidance for those fostering or adopting pets and also training classes and discounted medical fees.
Attention all cat lovers! The Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County (AWLMC) operates a no kill shelter for adoptable cats. They also promote responsible pet ownership. Founded in 2005, the AWLMC is in Gaithersburg. Cats that are available for adoption are featured on their website, and they also accept those interested in fostering.
The Home at Last Sanctuary (HALS) helps homeless, abused, and neglected animals. Since it was founded in 2012 the individually owned organization has re-homed over 195 dogs.
