7 Books Pet Lovers Can't Put Down

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

As an avid reader, I am always looking for new books to try out. Particularly during COVID-19, when spending a lot of time at home, I have been searching for new novels to read. Sometimes you just need a little bit of inspiration. If you are an animal lover, you have come to the right place! Here are 7 unique books that pet lovers enjoy.

1. Off the Leash – Matthew Gilbert

An interesting if nontraditional nonfiction book. This novel is written by a dog owner. He decided to document his experience and events at his local dog park, after adopting his own Yellow Lab puppy. He shares insights and musings enjoyable for any dog owner or dog lover.

2. All Creatures Great and Small – James Herriot

Most pet lovers have heard of (and read) James Herriot’s novels already, but as a classic, this must be included on the list. He is known for his books about practicing veterinary medicine in the English countryside. Although the book includes a wide variety of animal species, there are many dogs and cats featured. This is a must read for animal lovers of all kinds.

3. The Fur Person – May Sarton

Any cat lovers out there? If so, here is a book for you. This book details the experience of a cat slowly becoming a part of a woman’s life. Starting off as a street cat and gradually becoming a house cat, if you are a cat lover you are sure to enjoy this special book.

4. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle – David Wroblewski

This gripping novel is an Oprah’s Book Club pick. The lead character, after experiencing a tragedy, survives with the help of three dogs. If you are a lover of dogs and a true believer in their loyalty and service, this is the book for you.

5. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats – T.S. Eliot

If you are a lover of both cats and poetry, here is the perfect book. A poetry book rather than a novel, the selected poems were inspired by a variety of different cats owned by the author and other cats he met in passing. If you have seen the musical Cats, or better yet, the movie, then this book may be of interest. In fact, this book was the inspiration for the Cats musical!

6. Oogy – Larry Levin

If you are interested in fun tales of dog adoption, look no further. This heartwarming and adorable book is exactly what you have been looking for. In this novel, a family tells their story of falling in love with what they claim to be the “ugliest dog they had ever seen.”

7. Lily and the Octopus – Steven Rowley

This book is perfect for anyone with a senior pet preparing to go through the process of saying their goodbyes. The story details the owner coming to grips with loosing his dachshund, Lily. This story is a reminder of how much we love our pets, and how difficult it can be to let them go.
