Tips for Keeping Your Home Clean With a Pet

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

We are all worried about keeping our homes clean, perhaps now more than ever. If you have a dog or a cat, you know the struggle of keeping your house clean. You often find fur that your pet has shed on the couch, rug, and floor. Paw prints are often inked around the house, and blankets may smell like your local pet rescue. Here are some of our top tips for keeping your home clean when you have a pet, or multiple pets, in your house.

Use and Automatic Vacuum

If you own a cat or a dog that sheds, you will know that you are constantly sweeping or vacuuming their fur. Instead, invest in an automatic vacuum. Although you still may need to do a thorough sweep or vacuum once in a while, this item is most certainly a time saver. A robot vacuum can run while you are asleep or out at work, and you will wake up to a clean floor.

Invest in a Good Floor Mat

Particularly for dog lovers, having a good mat at the entrance and exit of your door is essential. For those rainy and muddy days, you will want to ensure that you wipe your pet’s paws before they tramp inside to track prints all over your kitchen floor. You can also try purchasing a portable dog paw cleaner, and leave it by the door where it is easily accessible when you return from your walk.

Stock up on Lint Rollers

If you love snuggling your pets as much as I do, you will want to stock up on heavy duty lint rollers. Having a few dozen of these to remove fur that gets stuck to your clothing and furniture is essential. I keep one in every room of the house.

Groom Your Pets Regularly

Grooming your pets regularly actually prevents excess shedding. It also has the bonus of keeping your pet healthy. You can even purchase grooming products specifically designed to minimize shedding. In addition to shedding prevention, also be sure to trim your pet’s nails regularly. This will prevent unnecessary scratches on your floor or other furniture.

Keep a Good Floor Cleaner Available

Yes, sometimes our pets have messy accidents indoors. Whether it is house training a new puppy, or a cat that gets sick on the carpet, you will want to be prepared for a potential mess. Keep in supply cleaners that work well on your carpet or hardwood floors, as well as a stock of paper towels.

Fresh Air

Fresh, nice smelling air is a must. Whatever scent you prefer, invest in a high-quality air freshener. Essential oil diffusers are a current trendy item that people have been using to keep their homes smelling fresh and clean. Before purchase, always make sure that the products you choose will be safe around your pet.

With these tips above, you can help to keep your home clean an tidy, even if you have a pet (or several!) living with you.
