Protect Those Paws: Hot Pavement Safety for Dogs

When the summer sun is blazing, the ground heats up much faster than you might expect! While it might feel fine to you in your shoes, our sidewalks, roads, and driveways can become scorching hot and dangerous for pup’s sensitive paws. On a sunny 95 degree day, black pavement can reach up to 140 degrees!

So how do you know when it's safe to walk your dog, and what can you do to protect those precious paws? Here are some tips for keeping your pup comfortable and cool all summer long.

Use the “5-Second Rule”

If you’re not sure if the ground is too hot, you can try this simple test:

Place the back of your hand on the pavement. This part of your skin has similar sensitivity to a dog’s paw pads. If you can’t keep your hand there comfortably for at least 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

This quick check can help prevent painful burns and injuries. If it’s uncomfortable for you, it’s unsafe for your dog.

Walk During Cooler Times of Day

If you can change your routine to stay inside in the middle of the day while the sun is at its peak, your dog will thank you! Take walks early in the morning (before 10 am) and later in the evening (after sunset) to avoid the worst of the heat.

These cooler hours not only protect paws, but also reduce the risk of heatstroke. And as a bonus, your walk will probably be more enjoyable for both of you!

Stick to Shaded or Natural Surfaces

If you have to walk during warmer hours:

  • Choose grassy areas, dirt paths, or shaded sidewalks whenever possible.

  • Avoid black asphalt and metal surfaces (like grates and manhole covers)

Switching up your walking route to include more natural surfaces is an easy way to keep your dog’s paws safer.

Try a Paw Balm or Booties

Just like we moisturize and protect our skin in the summer, dogs can benefit from a little extra paw care.

  • Paw balms create a protective barrier against heat and rough surfaces. Look for products with natural ingredients like shea butter or beeswax.

  • Dog booties provide the best protection but may take some getting used to. Let your dog practice wearing them indoors before heading out for a full walk.

After the Walk: Check and Soothe

Even with precautions, it’s smart to do a quick paw check after each walk. Look for:

  • Redness or swelling

  • Cracked or dry pads

  • Limping or licking

If you notice any signs of irritation, rinse your dog’s paws with cool water and apply a soothing balm. And of course, contact your vet if you see signs of a burn or ongoing discomfort.

Keep It Safe and Enjoyable

Summer walks are still a great source of exercise, enrichment, and bonding! We just need to take some extra steps to protect our pups from the heat. By being mindful of pavement temperatures, adjusting your routine, and using paw protection, you can help your dog stay safe and comfortable.
