This April, we had the pleasure of attending the 2025 Pet Preparedness Expo at Leisure World! It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with pet lovers in the community and bring attention to an issue that’s often overlooked: being prepared to care for your pet in the event of a medical emergency.
When life throws you a curveball, whether it’s an unexpected hospitalization, an accident, or any other medical event, the last thing you want to worry about is what’s happening with your pet. Yet so many pet owners don’t have a plan in place. At the expo, we spoke with dozens of pet parents who had never considered what would happen if they were suddenly unable to return home. Would a neighbor know how to feed your cat? Does anyone else know where your dog’s medication is kept? Would your emergency contact know who to call for help?
Having a reliable pet care plan isn't just a smart idea, it’s an essential part of responsible pet ownership. Just as you might create an emergency contact list or a healthcare directive for yourself, putting a pet care plan in writing ensures that your furry friend is protected no matter what happens. It provides peace of mind for you, and more importantly, it prevents your pet from experiencing unnecessary stress, confusion, or even harm during an already chaotic time.
Over the past decade, we’ve worked with countless families during times of crisis and unexpected change. We understand firsthand how overwhelming it can be to juggle urgent medical matters while also trying to coordinate care for a beloved pet. That’s why we created a detailed, easy-to-follow emergency pet care checklist designed to help you get prepared before a crisis hits.
This comprehensive guide covers everything a temporary caregiver would need to know, from your pet’s feeding schedule and medication instructions to how to safely access your home. It also includes spaces to list your veterinarian's contact information, preferred emergency contacts, and special behavioral notes that could be crucial during a stressful time.
Taking just a short amount of time now to organize this information can make all the difference in a real emergency. It’s a small step that has a big impact—ensuring your pet receives consistent, loving care when you can’t be there to provide it yourself.
